Blog Post and shifted Due Dates

Based on my reading of your previous papers, I have recognized that we need to do some more work on writing and constructing an argument. With this in mind, I am going to be shifting some due dates to give us more time before your next papers are due.

Thursday of this week: your next blog post is due.
Here is the link to the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/22/opinion/how-texas-teaches-history.html
Here are the questions for the blog post:
  1. Summarize the argument that the author makes in this article. (4-5 sentences)
  2. Do you agree with the author’s argument? Why or why not?
  3. Connect this idea to 1984. How is this issue similar to the techniques of obfuscation used in Oceania?
  4. Write your own level 3 question and thoroughly answer it.

Tuesday: Nov 8: Articles due
Friday, November 18: 1984 paper due

Vocabulary schedule will not change, so you will have a vocabulary journal due next week.

Today's agenda:
1) Benchmark 2!
This took up most of the period, so we will have the minimum wage seminar tomorrow. I will be creating a new 1984 calendar so that we can account for the days lost to testing. You should receive this tomorrow.

Tonight:
1) Read through page 156 in 1984. We will discuss these pages in class tomorrow, and we will be going back to cover the earlier pages as well.
2) Complete your blog post for this week. It will be due on Thursday afternoon by 2:30. This will be the first homework grade for the new quarter. The seminar on Friday, however, will count for Quarter 1. It will be your final opportunity to get those seminar grades for this quarter. www.nytimes.com/2013/04/09/technology/coursesmart-e-textbooks-track-students-progress-for-teachers.html?_r=0
  1. Summarize the technology described here. What are the benefits of such a system?
  2. What is your opinion on the use of this E-reader tracking system? Why?
  3. How does the author use tone to reveal his personal opinions about his topic? Discuss his diction in particular.
  4. Does this article suggest that we are moving more towards and society like 1984? Why or why not? Do you agree that this is “Big Brother, sort of, but with a good intent”?
3) All make up work must be turned in by Friday. I will not accept anything after that. I will not complete any grade changes after grades are entered on Friday.
